Ottawa-Vanier MPP Madeleine Meilleur has been named the new Attorney General for the province.
Former Attorney General John Gerretsen becomes Chair of Cabinet and a minister without portfolio.
Gerretsen, who had served in the post since October 2011, had announced last year that he will not run in the next election. “I am very pleased to hand of the ministry of the Attorney General to a very competent Madame Meilleur,” Gerretsen said at a news conference where the changes were announced.
The cabinet shuffle was prompted by the departure of Linda Jeffrey as Minister for Municipal Affairs and Housing. She will run for mayor of Brampton.
Meilleur has represented Ottawa-Vanier since 2003. She had been Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services for the past three years. She continues in her role as Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs.
Meilleur is a registered nurse and lawyer, specializing in labour and employment law.
A provincial budget is slated for the coming weeks. That could force an election for the Liberals, who have a minority government. The Liberals have 48 seats at Queen’s Park, including the Speaker; the Progressive Conservatives have 37 and the NDP have 27.
